Masters World Cup: A great showing for New Zealand

With a mixture of seasoned internationals and players who have taken the step from club hockey to international representation later in life, our Masters demonstrated the best example of sporting endeavours at all ages this year.

Spain were lucky enough to have them for two tournaments; the Barcelona Grand Masters World Cup (for men and women in the 60+ and 65+ bracket and men in the 70+ and 75+ age group) and the Exin Masters World Cup in Terrassa, Spain for 35+, 40+, 45+, 50+, 55+ and 60+ year-old men and women.

After a mixed bag of results throughout the two World Cups, our Women’s 60+ had an outstanding finish to capture a Silver Medal against long-time rivals England. The team started fast winning their first 3 games, including strong wins against two Australian teams. Maeve Morrison was effective in the attacking circle finishing with 5 goals for the tournament supported by a consistent team over the 10 days of competition.

A very significant section of our NZ contingent were the 18 strong Umpires officiating across the two
Masters World Cups. Sixteen of those represented us at Terrassa. The team overcame a few hurdles at the beginning of the competition but soon got on with the job in true kiwi spirit and performed very well throughout the tournament. Congratulations to all of you. A special mention goes to Paul Morrison, Kirsten Smith, Sue Anderson, and Vicki Allen who were appointed to their respective finals, with a good number of other kiwis also featuring in important matches.

The team at Hockey New Zealand would like to thank everyone involved from the coaches, managers and chef de mission to the doctor, officials, players and their families. You have all represented the Silver Fern with wonderful respect and sportsmanship. We would like to acknowledge the effort and commitment you have all given to this experience and know you have made many friendships and memories to cherish for life.

Some of the world’s best hockey teams will hit our shores this summer for the University of Waikato Men’s Four Nations in Tauranga and Hamilton.

The Vantage Black Sticks Men are set to host Olympic silver medallists Belgium (world ranking 3rd), India (6th) and Japan (16th) in a quad series from 17-28 January.

Split across two separate five-day series, Blake Park in Tauranga hosts the action from 17-21 January before teams head to Gallagher Hockey Centre in Hamilton from 24-28 January.

The Kiwis will be looking to start 2018 off with a bang as they begin their build-up for the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games in April.

New Zealand last played Belgium and Japan at the Hockey World League Semi Finals in Johannesburg where they recorded a 2-0 defeat and 3-1 victory respectively.

The Black Sticks will also be looking for revenge against India who came away with a 4-0 win in their last clash at the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup earlier this year.

For those who can’t be there in person, ALL games will be streamed live on the Vantage Black Sticks Facebook page ( and replays will then be available on demand at the conclusion of the live broadcast.

Fans who like the Vantage Black Sticks Facebook page will be notified through the mobile app or website as soon as the broadcast goes live.
