Celebration of Hockey at the Olympic Refugee Sports Day

Celebration of Hockey at the Olympic Refugee Sports Day

Amazing! What a great day celebrating Olympic Refugee Sports day on 19th June. Hockey New Zealand were privileged and excited to have the opportunity to introduce 300 school children to hockey, incorporating both the Olympic Values along with our key outcomes of a fun, safe, fair, and inclusive environment.

We were greatly rewarded with smiling faces, interaction of multiple cultures, languages, and ethnicities being all bought together through the participation of sport and the Kiwi attitude of giving things a go.

A massive thank you to recently retired Black Sticks and former Olympians Emily Gaddum and Pippa Hayward, along with Sandie Mackie and Shaun Matthews from Auckland Hockey, and Freya Bullock from Waitakere Hockey, who contributed strongly to the success of the day adapting to a wide range of abilities, language barriers, and ensuring the children were engaged, challenged, and most of all had fun.

Our thanks also to the NZOC for the invitation to be part of this very special day.
