In the 1950’s Chica Gilmer began a lifelong involvement in hockey as a player, coach, selector and manager. Throughout the 1980’s and 90s she gained prominence as a Tournament Director and Judge. Her career highlights were when she became a tournament director in the Women’s World Cups in Malaysia 1983 and Holland in 1986. Chica Gilmer is a Life Member of the New Zealand Women’s Hockey Umpires Association and the New Zealand Hockey Federation.
Thanks to the Mrs Chica Gilmer Education and Hockey Scholarship every year $2000 is made available for a talented under 19 female hockey player(s) or female umpire(s) who have been restricted from developing her talent due to financial limitations.

- Applicant must be an under 19 (as per HNZ rules for age) female hockey player or female umpire
- Must be recognised by applicant’s Association/Region as showing talent
- Must be able to show what educational purposes the scholarship will be used for and send receipts of costs post the grant of the scholarship
- Must be able to confirm disadvantaged by distance traveled or by financial position.
