Coach Education

Hockey New Zealand is currently reviewing its Coaching Framework including formal coach education for coaches.

Currently coaches can access support through the HNZ Online Coaching Portal, Sport NZ Sport Tutor online learning tool, Association coach development opportunities, and Regional Sports Trust (RST) resources and opportunities.

Coaches are encouraged to contact their local association and RST to support their on-going development.

Hockey New Zealand Coaching Portal

Coaches can access free online coaching portal courses targeting Small Sticks, Youth and Club spaces.

If you are unfamiliar with the Online Coaching Portal, click here for the users guide.

All completed online courses are reviewed by the coaches local development officer that is selected at the completion of the online course.

Sport NZ SportsTutor

Sport New Zealand has developed a free online learning tool for the sports sector through Sport Tutor. Sport Tutor has been created to support, help and guide people working at any level of the sports sector, featuring e-learning modules, tutorials, templates, reference material, video, social learning environments and more.

FIH Academy Coaching Courses

The FIH Hockey Academy has been developed by FIH to support the development of a global hockey workforce. This includes providing a range of programmes, resources and tools in four key areas: Play, Coach, Officiate and Manage.

FIH Hockey Academy Level One Coaching Course –Auckland & Christchurch

HNZ is excited to offer coaches the opportunity to attend an FIH Hockey Academy Level One Coaching course in New Zealand for 2020. The FIH Hockey Academy Level 1 Coaching course provides coaches with an introduction to the knowledge and core competencies required to coach hockey to children and adults.  All school, club and association coaches are invited to register.

HNZ will be offering an opportunity in both the North and South Island, alongside the FIH Hockey Pro League. Please find the details below, including a registration link.


FIH Level One Coaching Course

8.30 am-3 pm, Saturday 8th February 2020

National Hockey Centre, North Shore, Auckland

Cost: $60.00, this will include lunch and refreshments

Registrations have now closed for this course due to overwhelming interest. We have a waitlist available in the event that a coach withdraws from the course. If that happens we will contact a coach on the waitlist to take his or her place. If there is sufficient demand, Hockey New Zealand will provide a secondary course option.
