International update and New Zealand team selection process for 2021

We’re currently in discussions with Hockey Australia about the possibility of some form of Trans-Tasman competition later in 2021 now that the World Cups have been officially cancelled. Given the current border restrictions and quarantine requirements, it is likely that any event arranged will take place toward the later part of the year.  We will provide more details once arrangements are firmed up.

Given the nature of the year just gone and the uncertainty of 2021, Hockey NZ and the Masters Advisory Group have taken the approach of retaining the squads selected in 2020 for the 2021 season but allowing National Coaches to select a small number of additional players to create wider training squads.

The approach will allow more players to be part of National Team environments while showing loyalty to those players who committed to the 2020 World Cups which were cancelled as a result of the global Covid-19 pandemic. This would also provide a larger pool of competitive players leading into the 2022 World Cups.  Coaches could then choose the best players from the wider squad to compete in any competitions arranged in 2021.

If you’re not already selected in a 2020 NZ squad but are interested in being considered for NZ selection in 2021 as part of a wider training group, please register your interest by completing this form.
