Hockey New Zealand has been on a 3 year journey to identify and map out the various aspects of our digital ecosystem. In consultation with Edmund Bartley, Business Capability Consultant Technology at Sport NZ, we have selected a best of breed model for our digital ecosystem, which has several advantages, including ensuring platforms are fit for purpose, capable of being integrated, sustainable and will future proof the overall system.

Vision – A connected and engaged hockey whānau
Why/purpose – Technology is a key enabler for our growth, sustainability and opening up our game. Understanding who our hockey whānau are and delivering opportunities for all New Zealanders to be part of our sport
How/Mission – Hockey NZ will select the most suitable platforms and integrate these in order to create a digital infrastructure that is of value to our members, clubs, associations alongside providing Hockey NZ insights into our sport.

At its core, the digital ecosystem will deliver value to Hockey NZ, its stakeholders and members. The value proposition will vary for each specific group.

For Hockey NZ there are three key outcomes;

  • Secure better data on hockey’s membership allowing greater insights driven decision-making
  • Enhanced communications with members creating stronger engagement and profile with flow on marketing and commercial benefits
  • Improved efficiency across Hockey NZ and our member Associations/Clubs allowing for resource to be redirected into the sport with a subsequent increase in capability

Each phase of the digital ecosystem will meet these outcomes; however, the most critical part of the project is the Membership Management and Competitions Management platform as we recognised the need to provide a nationwide modern and reliable solution for Clubs and Associations that enables a user-friendly and personalised experience that would create efficiencies.

Hockey New Zealand are very excited to announce the introduction of a nationwide membership and competition management platform provided by PlayHQ, a sports administration technology platform designed to simplify the experience for Sporting Codes, Associations, Clubs, Volunteers and Participants.  Members will be responsible for their own personal data and will have access to their records to enable them to track their history and progress. We will, for the first time, capture players, coaches, officials and volunteers.

The PlayHQ platform has been developed and configured for hockey with both Hockey New Zealand and Association representatives to ensure it met the needs of our hockey community.  It handles competition management, registration, club administration, payments, game day management, live scoring and more. Since its launch, over 1m users have joined the platform, participating  in approximately 4,000 games every weekend, with more than 160,000 games already live-scored on the PlayHQ electronic scoring portal.

Some of the main features and benefits are outlined in the infographic and table below and HNZ are pleased to share that this platform will be free for Associations and Clubs to use.

In addition to improved administrative processes, the platform is also designed to enrich the experience of players and participants. The Participant Portal allows for easy online payments and family registration meaning participants can now manage both their and their family’s payments and game schedules with ease. Live scoring and up-to-date fixtures and ladders will boost engagement and help foster and grow our sporting community.

We look forward to introducing you to PlayHQ and will be launching the platform for Associations who indicate they would like to move over the new system in February in time for our winter competitions. The onboarding process will kick off in January with communications, education, training and key processes all part of the change management process. This will continue over the next couple of years until we are able to transfer all 32 Associations onto the system. There will be specific onboarding processes for Associations, Clubs and members and we’ll be working collaboratively with PlayHQ change management staff to roll out online training early in the new year so please look out for this notification and register to attend. In order for us to plan out our training schedule, we need to understand which Associations will be transitioning to the platform in 2022 and therefore if you are able to complete this quick survey form by 24th January 2022 that would be appreciated.
