Rising star ready for Vantage U18s

When you delve into the sporting life of Kate Irwin, it's clear that she's not your average student. Apart from coaching a year six St. Cuthbert's hockey team, Irwin is a valued member of the first XI hockey team, plays premier hockey for Sommerville, is part of the Auckland under 18s team for the upcoming Vantage National U18s Tournament, and is part of the Future Black Sticks programme.

As if that wasn't enough, she is also an accomplished cricket player, making a significant impact on both the St. Cuthberts first XI cricket team and the Takapuna Premier Women's team. She was also chosen for the Auckland under 19 Cricket Team. This led to her selection for the New Zealand under 19 World Cup squad. Initially a non-travelling reserve, halfway through the tournament she got the call up to join the team in South Africa.

Irwin's ability to juggle both sports at a high level is impressive, yet when asked which she prefers, she hesitated. "That's quite hard," she confessed, "It depends on what season I'm in. But I would probably say hockey."

Irwin's journey, however, has not been without obstacles. Last year, a back injury with two bulging discs forced her to make a difficult decision. She had to choose between participating in the under 18s tournament, but not at her full potential, or sitting it out and playing in the Fed Cup. It was a tough call, but in the end, she decided to skip the under 18s tournament which she admits was the right decision.

This year, though, she's back in action and filled with anticipation for the upcoming 2023 Vantage National Under 18s tournament. Being able to play this year, particularly as the tournament is set to take place in her hometown of Auckland, has got her excited with the prospect of playing in front of a home crowd of family and supporters.

She explains her excitement for tournaments like this: "It's super exciting, just playing against different regions and meeting new people. The hockey is really fun, tournaments are always a good time."

This year's Vantage National Under 18s tournament is more than just another competition for Irwin. It's a symbol of her resilience as she gets ready to hit the pitch once again. The women’s tournament is being held in Auckland, while the men will be heading to Dunedin.
