Hitu Patel celebrated for coaching achievments
Hitendra Patel has been recently acknowledged with the Hockey New Zealand Outstanding Contribution to Coaching Award, a recognition that embodies his remarkable two-decade long journey in the field. At the local club level, he served as the Head Coach of the Sommerville Hockey Club’s Premier Women’s Team, leading them to victory in the Premier Intercity Women’s Competition and a runners-up position in the Premier Auckland Women’s Competition.
Regionally, he’s played a vital role at North Harbour Hockey Association (NHHA). He served on the NHHA Schools Division Executive Committee and the Coaches Division Executive Committee, contributing his expertise as a volunteer since 2020 and 2021 respectively. In 2022, he acted as a Coach Developer for the Under 16 Northern Region Boys and Girls Teams, offering support to 10 coaches. His efforts were recognised by Harbour Sport, earning him a spot as a finalist for both the Junior Team of the Year and Community Coach of the Year awards.
Nationally, Hitu’s influence was just as significant. As the Head Coach of the North Harbour Hockey Under 18 Boys Premier Team, he led them to back-to-back national titles in 2021 and 2022. His contributions to Hockey New Zealand were numerous, serving as the Coach for the New Zealand Barbarians Men’s Team at the NZ Heritage Tournament, and as a Support Coach for the Under 18 Junior Black Sticks Super Camp.
