Vantage National Masters a resounding success

In a fantastic display of sportsmanship and camaraderie, the Hockey NZ 2023 Vantage National Masters tournament held at Blake Park in Tauranga was an absolute success. With 96 teams and nearly 2000 participants, officials, and volunteers, it was a thrilling week of hockey that saw players from all over New Zealand come together to compete and enjoy the game they love.

The weather was on the players’ side, with sunny skies and warm temperatures throughout the week. The atmosphere was electric, with players and spectators alike cheering on their teams and enjoying the games. The tournament off the field was also a success, with players bonding over their shared love of the game and the experience of competing at a national level.

But it wasn’t just about hockey. The tournament also showed the incredible generosity of the hockey community towards those in need. In the wake of Cyclone Gabrielle, Poverty Bay Hockey and Hawke’s Bay Hockey were hit hard. In response, Go Hockey, Just Hockey, and HNZ organised a donation drive, with teams and individuals donating hockey gear and care packages to those affected. It was a touching gesture that showed the true spirit of the game.

It was also a remarkable achievement for Poverty Bay and Hawke’s Bay to bring teams to the tournament in the wake of such devastation.

Overall, the Hockey NZ 2023 Vantage National Masters tournament was a resounding success. It showcased the incredible talent of New Zealand’s hockey players, as well as the generosity and kindness of the hockey community. It was a week filled with excitement, laughter, and great sportsmanship, and one that will be remembered for years to come.

Next up for NZ Masters there is anticipation for the upcoming trans-Tasman Masters tournament in Christchurch in April. Many of the players who participated in the national tournament have played themselves into contention to represent New Zealand, with selectors taking note of standout performances throughout the week.

The trans-Tasman Masters tournament will see New Zealand take on Australia in a fiercely competitive series, with both sides vying for supremacy on the field over several age groups. With the talent on display at the national tournament, there is no doubt that New Zealand will be well-represented and ready to take on their rivals across the Tasman.
